Why does the immune system attack harmless materials? Although disease symptoms increase the response of the immune system, cells in the system will target anything that is not identifiable as self. In other words, anything that is not part of the organism will be attacked. This can lead to problems such as organ rejection and severe, sometimes life-threatening reactions to normally harmless substances. Presumably the reaction to all non-self substances allows the immune system to eliminate infectious agents such as viruses before they multiply to numbers where disease symptoms manifest themselves.
