Preface --Second Edition

The aim of this edition, like the earlier one, is to give an exhaustive exposition of the fundamental concepts, techniques and devices in electrical engineering. The basic concepts in Electric Circuit Theory and Electric Machines have remained more or less the same over the years since the first edition of this text appeared in 1991.

Two entirely new chapters on measurement and instrumentation systems and electric energy systems have been added. In some of the initial chapters, many sections have been rewritten. The text is divided into four major sections: circuit theory, electromechanical energy conversion, measurement and instrumentation and energy systems. The treatment is such that it gives beyond a mere introduction so that the reader can make the transition to more advanced, specialized texts later without undue intellectual embarrassment/efforts. Even effort has been made to make the application of the theory meaningful for the students.

The book is organized to provide maximum flexibility without loss of continuity so that the individual faculty member can easily adapt the material to meet the needs of his or her students.

Electric circuit theory is discussed in Chapters 1-7. It encompasses all the fundamental techniques of circuit analysis. Basic Concepts of Electromechanical energy conversion are covered in Chapters 8-13, Chapter 14 deals with basic measurement techniques and instrumentation and Chapter 15 dwells on electrical energy systems including non-conventional energy sources.

A large number of typically illustrative solved examples (more than 200) cover every type of practical/theoretical situation and modeling related to circuit theory, machines, measurement and instrumentation and energy systems.

The unsolved problems relating to the topics given in a chapter are, in many cases, quite different from solved examples. Answers to these problems are provided in Appendix B.

This book, the first comprehensive work of its kind in India, will be useful to undergraduate students of all branches of engineering. It will help the reader in grasping the subject and serve as a self-study guide to the students preparing for competitive examinations such as AMIE, GATE, Graduate IETE, UPSC Engineering Services, IAS, etc.

We have had the benefit of valuable advice and suggestions from many professors and students who used the earlier edition of this book. All these individuals have influenced this edition. We express our thanks and appreciation to them. We hope this relationship/response would continue in the future also.
