In today’s scenario, soon as we look around ourselves, we see a lot of buildings, bridges & roads etc. Some of them are beautiful, some classy, some huge, some of them marvelous and some not so good. We see men at work by the building site or the road site putting the bricks and mortar together. But before such structures can be constructed all the planning and analyzing and designing is done by Civil Engineers.

When you build your house, it applies lots of load on the ground where you construct it. The soil has to withstand the load. If the soil is not strong, the house will collapse. Civil Engineers who specialize in Geotechnical Engineering know all about how soil behaves. Will the soil safely take the load of your house. How much will the ground settle? Geotechnical Engineers also know how to design foundations for bridges, dams, tunnels, offshore structures. They have now developed techniques to improve the soil at a particular site if it is not up to the mark. We hardly know about their work because most of it is buried below the ground.

All Civil Engineer have to study “Geotechnical Engineering” among many other subjects.

In this book on Geotechnical Engineering, the authors have put in marvelous effort to bring together not only the basics but the present and future of Geotechnical Engineering. I would like call this text a futuristic one that will redefine the learning of Geotechnical Engineering.

This Online Learning Center is designed to enhance your learning experience. It provides a broad array of resources that will benefit both the instructors and students, Please visit the Information Center to explore the Book's features.

Student’s Center contains sample chapters from the Book. These would give you the flavour of the published Book. The other features of the Student’s Center that would be of immense help to you are the Self-Assessment Quizzes and Web Pointers for further reading. Solutions to Numerical Problems whose answers are given in the Book are also available.

The Instructor’s Center will provide the faculty with Chapter-wise PowerPoint Slides of the diagrammes given in the Book to facilitate classroom teaching; solutions to all the Numerical Problems and Objective Type Questions. This is available to the instructors only. Additional Resource Material will discuss about various aspects of Geotechnical Engineering. This part will be updated from time to time with new material written by the authors. A Discussion Forum has been set up wherein thoughts and views and suggestions can be put in. This part of the Site is password protected and will be available to only those instructors who decide to use the Book as the text for their courses and prescribe it to students.
