Themes and Theories of Child Development

Application Questions

1

Answer the following three questions by applying either of the two themes of child growth and development: the nature/nurture controversy or the continuity/discontinuity controversy.
  1. What psychological or social traits characterize the "ideal" person that you would like as a life partner or marital partner?
  2. What psychological or social traits characterize the "ideal" child?
  3. What psychological or social traits would you like to see all adults achieve in order to have a successful culture/civilization?

2

Modern developmental psychologists argue that children are active agents who shape their own environments. Considering your formative years with your parent(s), provide an example of how you molded your parent(s) and how they shaped your development.

3

Developmental psychologists recognize the importance of culture in shaping children's development. Choose a friend who was raised in a culture different than your own. In what ways were the norms and patterns of his/her culture different than yours? How did his/her cultural experiences directly and indirectly shape his/her development?
