William James claimed that "the newborn baby's world is nothing more than a blooming, buzzing confusion". Is this true? With reference to one sensory system, cite evidence to either support or to dispute this claim.

At birth, physicians assess a newborn's reflexes as a gauge of central nervous system functioning. If you are fortunate enough to be acquainted with a very young infant, take a few moments to examine his/her reflexes (with parental permission, of course!). Refer to Table 5-1 for a description of permanent and temporary major reflexes. What is the purpose of each reflex?

Ann and Andrew now have brought Jamie, their newborn baby, home from the hospital. Ann and Andrew are already deeply in love with Jamie - in particular, they love to look into his beautiful blue eyes and they wonder what he sees as he looks about his world. As loving parents, Ann and Andrew are very much interested in stimulating their baby's development. At this time, they wonder how well their baby sees and how they might stimulate his visual development. For example, how can they decorate his nursery so as to meet his visual needs as a newborn? As an older infant? In their enthusiasm, they worry that they might inadvertently overstimulate Jamie. So, Ann and Andrew have turned to you for advice. What do you recommend?

Suzie was born with Down syndrome. Although now 18-months-old, Suzie functions like an infant of about 12 months of age. Her parents continue to be keenly interested in supporting her growth and development. What kinds of activities with Suzie are advised?

Much still remains unknown about perceptual development during infancy and childhood. After having read the textbook material about perceptual development, pose one question that you would like to have answered about visual development, auditory development, or some other sense. Now, design a simple experiment to try to answer that question! In the experiment, what methodology and equipment will be required? What age(s) will you test? Why?
