Focus on BAII+ financial calculator
Where the previous edition of Jerome focused on the Sharp financial calculator, the BA-35 calculator and the BAII+ calculator, in response to reviewer feedback the 4/e focuses (in chapters 8 through 15) primarily on the BAII+, which dominates the field. Selected keystroke solutions for the Sharp and BA-35 will be presented on the OLC and CD-ROM and flagged in the text by icons.
Calculator keystroke format
Responding to reviewer feedback, the author has created this new feature for the text in which the BAII+ financial calculator keying instructions are displayed alongside the algebraic solutions to exercises. Highly regarded by reviewers, the feature both consolidates space considerations and presents the mathematical material in a format which balances instructor preferences for algebraic and calculator solutions
Design presentation of Markup
To circumvent student and instructor frustration with Markup in Chapter 4, the author is replacing the problem solution model (which employs a table) in Sections 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5 by a more intuitive model that employs a pictorial paradigm. This should be an easier model for students to understand and use.
"Points of Interest" boxes
Thirteen new "Points of Interest" boxes have been added to the text, bringing the total number to 35.
Increased number of easy problems
Again, responding to reviewer feedback, the author has increased the number of easy problems in the text (particularly in Chapters 4, and 8-13, where students have had the greatest difficulties). Increased balance of easier to more difficult problems with an emphasis on introducing more easier/confidence building exercises that were lacking in prior editions. Over 90 new problems have been added, particularly in Chapters 1 through 5.
Movement of Glossary from end of text to end of chapters
With easy to find references inserted into the Index, the Glossary is being broken down by chapter and inserted at the end of each chapter and cross-referenced by page number for easy reference to replace Key Terms.
CD-ROM Appendix
The author has included a 'How to Succeed in Business Mathematics' Appendix on the CD-ROM. At appropriate points in the early chapters of the text, students will be referred to topics in this how-to appendix. The feature serves to both facilitate student learning and to increase movement between the core text and supplemental items.
Content Shift
Moved Chapter 16 from text to OLC and CD ROM. Material no longer covered in core curriculum.
Interactive Exercises
Added exercises that require students to go online to the OLC and work through them. Purpose for doing so is to highlight the OLC for students and get them using it more
CIFP & ICB Problems
40 problems have been incorporated from course materials developed by the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning and the Institute of Canadian Bankers.
Concept Questions
Found at the end of approximately half the sections, the Concept Questions exercise students' intuition and test their understanding of preceding concepts, principles and relationships among variables before moving ahead.
100% Canadian
Throughout the text, examples, exercises, problems, Points of Interest, etc., reflect current financial and business practices in Canada, including use of real financial instruments and economic data.
Points of Interest
Illustrate the application and misapplication of mathematics of business and personal finance.
Tips and Traps
These boxes draw attention to pitfalls, simplifications and shortcuts, which will cut down on common errors and save students time.
Practical Math Review (Chapters 1,2,3 and 5)
Review topics are integrated with practical applications to provide students with an opportunity to review key math concepts they will encounter throughout the text.
Easy-Reference Formulas
Inside Cover Summaries are easy-to-find references of key formulas for students. A tear out formula card is included for test situations or posting at workstations.
