Feature Summary

  • Chapter-opening clips introduce students to the chapter’s topics and explain the business applications of the new material. Students can see the real-world applications of business math through articles, Web sites, and advertisements, which makes the topics relevant to them.
  • Learning Unit Objective let students know what they can expect to learn in each chapter, and refer to the page numbers where these objectives can be achieved.
  • Real World Examples are extensively integrated throughout the text. These examples provide interesting applications and illustrations of the text material.
  • Key Formulas and Concepts are called out in the text, and identified by number. The Key Formulas for each chapter can be found in the Chapter Organizer and Reference Guide at the end of the chapter and on the Online Learning Centre. In addition, important concepts unique to the study of business math are set apart from the text and highlighted for easy reference and review. Explanations are given in a step-by-step format that is easy to follow and remember, followed by relevant examples.
  • Practice Quizzes punctuate each Learning Unit, and provide students to practice the skills that they have just learned. The answers are provided at the end of the chapter to provide immediate feedback on students’ understanding of the units.
  • Blueprint Aid Boxes are designed to help students navigate word problems. They show students how to begin the problem-solving process, gets them actively involved in dissecting the word problem, shows them visually what has to be done before calculating, and provides a structure for them to use. In addition, a step-by-step approach is provided that offers students with an alternative method for solving problems, allowing individuals to select the method that best suits them.
  • Chapter Organizer and Reference Guides can be found at the end of each chapter. Key points, formulas, and examples are provided. A list of vocabulary is also included, and all include page references.
  • Critical Thinking Discussion Questions are thought provoking questions that follow the Chapter Organizer and are designed to get students to think about the larger picture and the ‘whys’ of Business Math. They go beyond the typical questions by asking students to explain, define, create, etc.
  • Problems – At the end of each chapter is a complete set of drill and word problems, similar to those found throughout the chapter. Challenge problems let students stretch their understanding and ability to solve more complex problems. A Summary Practice Text concludes the problem section and covers all the Learning Objectives in the chapter. The answers for the odd-numbered drill and word problems, and all challenge problems and summary practice test questions are located in Appendix A.
  • Business Math Scrapbook – At the end of each chapter students will find clippings from newspapers, magazines, and web pages. These articles will give students a change to use the theory provided in the chapter to apply to the real world, and put new math skills to work.
