The most successful drawings and prints make full use of the various line styles discussed in Chapter 1 of Launching the Imagination. Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art Collection of Drawings and Prints (http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/department.asp?dep=9). This page showcases artworks by some of the most prolific artists of the last 600 years. Look at each of the images and consider the following questions.

a) Locate an image that makes strong use of implied lines, one that uses contour lines and one that uses gestural lines. Do you think that the artist made the best possible stylistic decisions when selecting that particular type of line? Why or why not?

b) Locate images that exemplify the creative use of shape. Did the artist use organic or geometric shapes? Are there any shape relationships in the image?
