Two-Dimensional Design- Organization

Chapter 3: Two-Dimensional Design: Organization Internet Exercises

MC Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, was a master of two-dimensional composition. He was able to manipulate two-dimensional composition to create illusory space. Through metamorphosis and distortion of perspective, he created a world that defies reality as we understand it. Visit the Escher Art Collection (http://www.cs.unc.edu/~davemc/Pic/Escher/) or the World of Escher (http://www.worldofescher.com/gallery/) to see examples of his work.

a) Locate images that focus on symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance and radial balance. Discuss how Escher used the elements of 2D design to create unique compositions.

b) Escher also manipulated architectural drawings to create unique compositions. Select three of his impossible structures and discuss how he made a two-dimensional depiction of a three-dimensional design seem completely possible.
