In Launching the Imagination, Mary Stewart discusses the various elements
of three-dimensional design. Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art Collection
(http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_Of_Art/index.asp).
This site contains over two million art pieces from all over the world. Browse
the museum's collection of three-dimensional art and consider the following
questions. a) Locate images that strongly demonstrate the use of line in a 3 dimensional
structure. How does the artist use line to help define the form? b) Some 3 dimensional artworks are relatively shallow (relief) whereas others
are quite volumetric. Compare and contrast two sculptures that are similar in
style but differ in relationship to how they use volume and mass. c) Sculpture has the potential of using space to create shape. Find a sculpture
that effectively and creatively defines the negative space around it or within
its boundaries. How does the definition of this space contribute to the aesthetic
appeal or emotional impact of the work? |
