Three-Dimensional Design- Organization

Chapter 8: Three-Dimensional Design: Organization Internet Exercises

Architecture not only uses all of the elements of three-dimensional design, but also has to consider the purpose of the structure, be it a church, an office building, or residency. Visit the Great Buildings Online Collection (http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings.html), and as you peruse the various structures, consider the following questions.

a) Look for balance and symmetry, and differences in scale and proportion in various buildings. How does the architect use the elements of 3D design to create a building that not only serves its function, but also acts as an aesthetic work of art?

b) Find a building that has strong emotional impact. How does the use of the elements of 3D design help convey the emotion?

c) Find a building designed by the architect Antonio Gaudi. Does the appearance of the structure seem to fit its purpose? Why or why not?
