Chapter 13 is designed to allow you to:
    1. List major changes that occur in the body during pregnancy and the altered nutrient needs associated with each change.
    2. List factors that may interfere with a successful pregnancy outcome, and specify the optimal weight gain during pregnancy for the normal adult woman.
    3. Plan an adequate, balanced diet for the pregnant woman and the breastfeeding woman using the Food Guide Pyramid as a basis.
    4. Identify the nutrients that may need to be supplemented during pregnancy and explain the reason for each.
    5. Explain how many of the typical discomforts of pregnancy can be minimized by diet changes.
    6. Describe the process of breastfeeding and list some advantages of breastfeeding for the mother and infant.
    7. Describe the disease fetal alcohol syndrome and its outcomes in an infant.
