 | Gilbert's Living with Art, 6/e Mark Getlein
What's New- Innovative and Topical: Gilbert's Living with Art pioneered in presenting single-page biographies keyed to discussions of artworks in the text, as well as essays on such topics as restoration and public art.
The sixth edition continues this tradition with Artist Biographies of Michelangelo, Maya Lin, and Olowe of Ise. New Art Issues include "Who Is an Artist?" and "Presenting the Past".
- Superb Support: Teaching and learning from the text has never been easier. A student CD-ROM is packaged with each copy of the text, further bolstering the unique student supplement package of the Time Line, Projects Manual and Writing Guide, Design Overlays, and Pronunciation Guide.
For instructors, an Instructors Manual, Test Bank, Online Learning Center, and slide set is available.
- Crossing Cultures: These new brief essays address the interaction of the European art tradition with those of other cultures.
Completely new to the Sixth Edition, the subjects include: Japanese Prints and the West, Africa, Primitivism, and Modern Art, Masking Europe (African Masquerade), and Hellenistic Art and the Buddha Image.
- Broader Coverage of Non-Western and of Contemporary Art: Recent changes in the world of art are always reflected in Gilbert's Living with Art. To incorporate a broader sense of the aesthetics and traditions of the world, new works have been included in Part I. These images introduce artists from non-Western cultures to the opening sections of the text and provide a greater emphasis on context and meaning in art.
- Revised Arts in Time: Part V (Arts in Time) has been restructured to provide more considered coverage of contemporary art and of non-Western art.
- New Author: It is with a deep respect that Mark Getlein undertakes the work of revising Gilbert's Living with Art. His challenge was to retain the writing's style, wit, and clarity while recognizing the important changes in the art world since the publication of the fifth edition in 1997.
As an artist and editor, Mr. Getlein brings an experienced and articulate voice to the material. Mark most recently edited A History of Art in Africa -- recognized by The Library Journal as one of the sixty best references of 2000 -- and The Longman Anthology of British Literature; his work on these and other texts has taught him to synthesize the rich traditions of the world's cultures and to make them accessible to readers of various backgrounds. As a painter, he is also able to help students understand both the intellectual and practical process of creating art.
Mark enjoys the interactions and introductions -- to instructors, artists, curators, and critics -- that have come with his work on Living with Art. He invites adopters and readers to contact him directly care of art@mcgraw-hill.com.
- Living with Art CD-ROM: This exciting study tool, packaged free with every copy of the text, offers students an interactive tutorial in the elements and media, as well as review aides and quizzes to help them better master the text material.
