In addition to being able to recognize all of the key terms, artists, and artworks presented to you in the chapter, after reading the chapter you should be able to:

1.

compare and contrast the chronological approach of studying art with the thematic approach, citing the benefits each has to offer.

2.

describe each of the nine themes presented in this chapter and, for each, explain how specific works of art explore these themes. The nine themes are:
  • arts of daily life
  • art and the sacred
  • art and the social order
  • storytelling
  • the here and the now
  • the human experience
  • invention and fantasy
  • art and nature
  • art and art

3.

discuss the fact that works of art may share the same theme while having completely different purposes, and demonstrate this through the discussion of specific works of art for each of the themes listed above.

4.

describe, for each of the themes listed above, the diversity of art forms, styles, media, and cultures of origin among works of art that share a common theme.
