In addition to being able to recognize all of the key terms, artists, and artworks presented to you in the chapter, after reading the chapter you should be able to:

distinguish between composition and design as used in visual works of art.

2.

define the following principles of design, and discuss their use in specific works of art:
  • unity and variety
  • balance
  • emphasis and subordination
  • proportion and scale
  • rhythm

3.

distinguish between symmetrical and asymmetrical balance, describe how to achieve each, and explain the reasons for using either type of balance in specific works of art.

4.

distinguish between proportion and scale as terms both referring to size, but having different implications.

5.

explain the interrelationship of rhythm with repetition and time.

6.

give a visual analysis of Pablo Picasso's painting Girl Before a Mirror using your understanding of the principles of design listed above.
