Art and Artists

Artists: Jackson Pollock

Pollock's painting title Convergence alludes to crucial cultural and scientific themes inherent to the atomic age. As an artistic figure, Pollock raises questions about the relationship of modern artists to their work that should now be totally familiar to us. Does childhood trauma produce artistic brilliance? Are drug abuse and illness by-products of artistic life? Was the chaotic style he developed a reflection of the reigning Cold War Zeitgeist, or his traumatic upbringing? Perhaps it's fair to say these multiple elements and themes "converged" in his work. A great on-line article by Harry Hilson called Homage to Jackson Pollock highlights these issues, and presents perhaps the best on-line springboard for exploring themes related to this artist. This site also provides links to other relevant sites and on-line collections of his work.

Artists: Alice Neel

A highly self-directed artist, Alice Neel bucked both her ascribed role imposed by her family and the artistic trends that dominated the most productive years of her life. To find out more, check out the websites listed below:
