Homeostasis is emphasized throughout the text. Each systems chapter has its own main section explaining in depth how that particular system helps maintain homeostasis. Icons are used to indicate portions of the text that relate systems or functions to homeostasis. Applying Your Knowledge to the Concepts essay questions at the end of the systems chapters further enforce the relevance of homeostasis.

Dr. Mader brings real-life applications into the text to lead students into the content of the chapter as well as showing students how what they are learning affects their lives. These types of tools are found in the chapter openers, BioEthics Boxes, Health Focus Boxes, and Ecology Focus Boxes. All chapters dealing with AIDS, STDs and cancer have been rewritten to include the latest research, techniques and information. Additionally, the chapter on cancer has been reorganized so that the characteristics of cancer cells and classification of cancer now more logically begins the chapter.

Online Learning Center: This animation, activity and quizzing rich web site will be tied directly to the text via OLC icons. These text icons will direct students to activities or animations that will give students a "visual example" of difficult processes as well as "Working Together" boxes to emphasize homeostasis to the student.

Human Systems Work Together animations: These art pieces in the text summarize each chapter's human body systems visually and describe how each organ system works with the other systems. This art from the book will be the basis of this animation. The combination of text illustration and Online Learning Center animation will be an excellent learning tool. These animations will also serve as an excellent teaching aid for instructors.

E-Learning Connections appear at the end of every chapter and organize all of the technology support material for the student into the chapter framework. Correlation tables enable students to see what's available on the Online Learning Center. When the student goes to the OLC, the same correlation table organizes the material there--they only need to click on the resource they want to use.
