2. To identify the reasons for the widening economic gaps within and among nations at the end of the twentieth century.

3. To examine the major social and political changes in the post-Cold War era and determine their overall effect.

4. To examine the growing trend towards international cooperation and to explain the continued strength of national and regional loyalties.

5. To identify the impact of cultural modernization and examine some of the common reactions against modernism.
