Teaching Reading: A Balanced Approach for Today's Classrooms

Teaching Reading provides a practical, research-based introduction to teaching elementary-aged children to read. The text is based on the premise there is no one best way to teach children to read. It takes overall balanced approach showing teachers how to use a variety of strategies to meet individual student needs. Built on a strong research base containing the latest findings and theories in literacy instruction, the text shows pre-service teachers how to put theory into practice.

The text's content is related to both the IRA/NCTE National Standards in the Classroom and the Standards for Reading Professionals. Web sites, portfolio activities and additional classroom strategies referenced in the text are located inside this Online Learning Center.
