Chapter 5 Exercises

  • Pick two directories from Section 5.2.2. How many hyperlinks must you go through to obtain information about the following items: lobster, Toyota Rav4’s, and movie reviews? Based on this limited test, how do the two directories compare? (section 5.2, problem 1)
  • Search for your own name in the white pages listed in Section 5.2.11. What were the results? How many people can you locate in the U. S. with the same name as you? (section 5.2, problem 8)
  • Using the yellow pages, can you locate the business, Meeting House Data Communications? Using other Web search mech-anisms, can you locate this company? Report your findings. (section 5.2, problem 10)
  • Repeat the following queries three times, using three different search engines (nine queries in total):

    (a) World’s Highest Mountain

    (b) Mount Everest

    (c) Everest

    What were your results? Explain. (section 5.3, problem 16)
  • On your favorite search engine, what query would you use first to find information about appetizers and desserts? Experiment with other types of queries. Which query yielded the best results? (section 5.3, problem 18)
  • Perform the following pattern matching queries, using a single search engine: waffle , Waffle , Belgian Waffle , waffles , Waffles , and Belgian Waffles . What were the resulting numbers of hits? Were they as expected? Explain. (section 5.3, problem 22)
  • In traversing through a directory to locate information about kayaking in Prince William Sound, how may different URLs did you have to follow? What were the corresponding categories you went through? (section 5.4, problem 24)
  • Try to locate ticket information for the next Olympic Games. Were you able to find out what ticket prices are going to be? What queries did you perform, and what were the results of those queries? (section 5.4, problem 26)
  • Define the phrase Uniform Resource Characteristic (URC) and describe the role it is designed to play in the indexing of Web pages. (section 5.5, problem 29)
  • Can you locate any information describing how Web pages are indexed by any specific search engine? If so, describe the process in the particular case you found and list your reference(s). (section 5.5, problem 30)
  • Write a paragraph summarizing the items that you feel are the most important in computing a relevancy score. (section 5.5, problem 34)
