Chapter 8 Exercises

  • Using one of the procedures outlined in this section, copy a GIF image and a JPG image from a clip art collection. Redisplay these two images on a Web page you create, include an appropriate page title, and state where the images came from. (section 8.2, problem 1)
  • Find Web pages that use interlaced and animated GIFs and report their URLs. Do you prefer interlaced to standard GIFs? What does the animation speed of an animated GIF depend on? (section 8.3, problem 6)
  • Create a “sampler” Web page that demonstrates the various uses of the image tag ALIGN attribute. Include text to explain what you are trying to illustrate. (section 8.4, problem 8)
  • Design an experiment to determine if there is a way to center an image on a Web page and have text wrap around both sides of it. Explain your results. (section 8.4, problem 9)
  • Create an image map either by producing your own image, or by obtaining a legal one from the Web. Include a default area tag. (section 8.5, problem 16)
  • Can you locate a weather site that has a document containing an image map? If so, how is the image map used? List two other occasions when an image map would prove useful. (section 8.5, problem 18)
  • If a square-shaped 15-inch monitor has a resolution of 1000 ×800, what is its resolution as expressed in dots per inch? (section 8.6, problem 23)
  • Research digital cameras. How much do they cost? What is the process involved in downloading a picture from the camera to the Web? (section 8.6, problem 26)
  • Create an HTML document that scales an image of a mountain by using the HEIGHT and WIDTH attributes. Vary the attributes three different ways to achieve three different special effects us-ing the same image. (section 8.7, problem 28)
