The Presidency

Analytical Thinking Exercise

  1. Looking at Figure 12-3 regarding percentage of bills passed by Congress on which the president announced a position. Note two presidents with the most and least success. Are there any presidents who were successful when their political party did not control Congress? What is the success rate when the president's party controls only one chamber of Congress?
  2. Use the analytical thinking format in Chapter One of this Study Guide to discuss "The Postmodern President" by Richard Rose at the end of Chapter Twelve in the text.
  3. Box 12-4 presents some information on impeaching, convicting, and removing the president. Apply these criteria to the impeachment proceedings against Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton.
  4. You might seek information for this exercise from appropriate web-sites.
  5. After consulting Box 12-1 on the Electoral College, formulate a position on whether to reform or abolish it. You may want to get more information from a web-site such as: http://www.state.ma.us/sec/ele/elecoll/collidx.htm
