Transitions, 3/e
Barbara Fine Clouse

What's New

  • Support for Multilingual Students. Each reading is followed by a section headed For Multilingual and Other Writers that explains grammar and usage points apparent in the reading.
  • Abundant apparatus. Every reading selections offers headnotes, previews, a prereading activity, three sets of post-reading questions, and an unusually generous number of writing activities (including journal activities, collaborative activities, and one assignment that requires students to go beyond the writing class).
  • Photo Program. Paired photos illustrating historical transitions enliven the text and serve as prompts for student writing.
  • 28 New Readings. Introducing a variety of new voices and styles--from Amy Tan to Malcolm X; Deborah Tannen to Russell Baker.
  • Bioengineered Food and Stem Cell Research. Three added chapters address areas of current public debate. Three essays in each chapter present different opinions of the subject, encouraging student synthesis and further research.
  • Post-Reading Workshops. These innovative text activities help students identify and appreciate a specific rhetorical feature, stylistic concern, or grammar/usage point that is apparent in the reading--for example, Brent Staples' use of verbs or Richard Rodriguez's use of parenthesis.
