Log onto the Medicine/Public Health Initiative (http://www.sph.uth.tmc.edu/mph/) home page and, in the grey area on the left, select "Education Forum." Read the article entitled "A Focus on Community: Towards a Conceptualization of Health for the New Millennium." After reading the article, click on "To Learn more about our seven goals click Here" at the bottom of the page. Read about the seven goals and then answer the following questions:
a. What does M/PHI see as the future for public health?
b. Based upon what you have read, how does the field of public health differ from the field of medicine? What implications might this have for the promotion of public health efforts?
c. Who will need the most education to bring about the goals discussed in this paper? What does this group need to learn?Exercise 2
Log onto the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) Web site (http://www.askeric.org). Select "ERIC Database" from the list on the left side of the page. In the search box, type in the words "high school dropouts" and select "Search Years 2000 through 2001"; then click on "Submit." On the next page, confirm the request by selecting "Submit" again.
a. How many documents are returned?
b. Which article(s) would be most helpful in an attempt to understand why children decide to drop out of school?
c. How could you narrow your search to find statistics exclusively about dropout rates? Go back to the search page and narrow your search. How many documents are returned this time? Exercise 3
Choose any one of the three institutions discussed in this chapter.
Using a search engine such as yahoo.com, enter the term "religion," "medicine," or "education"
in the search window and conduct a search. Follow the links you find.
What do the resources you discover tell us about the nature of this institution in our society?
Write a short report, describing the picture you form of the institution from the information available
on the Internet and discussing whether it is possible to fully understand the institution using
only the material and information you can find on the Internet.
