Chapter Three explores the role of the director and the director's collaborators. After reading this chapter you should:

Understand the role the director plays in coordinating the entire artistic side of the production.

Be familiar with the profile of the historical evolution of the director beginning with Aeschylus.

Understand the importance of the emergence of the "auteur director" in the twentieth century.

Know that the director needs to understand dramatic purpose and dramatic structure so that the director may guide the performers in making the text come alive.
