Ausweise (ID cards)

Explore the following website and answer the questions that follow:

Personal IDs

  • What three types of IDs are described?
  • Which one of these IDs is only for children?
  • Look at the section on fees (Gebühren). How much does a Personalausweis cost?
  • How much does a Reisepass cost for young people aged 16 to 26? For adults 27 and over?
  • Which of these IDs is mandatory beginning age 16? Hint: vollendet means "completed".

Please submit your answers to the above questions. Then print out the Kinderausweis application form and fill in as much of the requested information as you can! Please bring your completed form to class.

Explore this website and write a report that answers the following questions:

Driver's License

  • How does the new EU (European Union) driver's license look compared to the one in your wallet? What are some similarities/differences?
  • Does the look of this license differ from country to country in Europe? If yes, guess how!
  • Which type of certification (Klasse) do you need in order to operate
    • a passenger car
    • a bus
    • a motorcycle?
  • Now take a guess: What is the minimum age in order to receive a driver's license in Germany?

Hint: Don't be overwhelmed by the amount of information on this site -- symbols will help you with answering the above questions!

Submit your answers in writing and remember them. Your instructor may wish to discuss your conclusions in class.
