abortion  Expulsion or removal of an embryo or fetus before it is capable of independent life. 398
abstinent  Refraining from sexual intercourse. 377

barrier methods  Contraceptives designed to be a physical barrier that prevents sperm and ovum from meeting. 382
basal body temperature (BBT) method  A technique for determining ovulation by recording daily basal body temperature. 378
birth control  Any device used for the regulation of conception, pregnancy, and birth. 374
celibate  Not engaging in either solitary or partnered sex. 377
cervical cap  A small plastic or rubber cuplike contraceptive device positioned over the cervical opening. 387
cervical mucus method  A technique for determining ovulation by observing changes in cervical mucus secretions from the vagina. 379
condom  A contraceptive sheath-like device worn over the erect penis or in the vagina to prevent sperm from entering the vagina and uterus. 382

Depo-Provera  The trade name for a progestin-only contraceptive injection (intramuscular). 393
diaphragm  A dome-shaped rubber contraceptive device worn in the vagina over the cervix to prevent sperm from entering. 385
dilation and curettage (D and C)  A surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated and the inner uterine lining scraped with a metal curette; sometimes used as an abortion procedure during the second trimester. 402
dilation and evacuation (D and E)  A second trimester abortion procedure in which the cervix is dilated and the fetus removed with a combination of forceps and vacuum aspiration. 402
elective abortion  Intentional expulsion of an embryo or fetus. 374
family planning  Planning for whether and when to have children. 374
female condom  A contraceptive sheath worn inside the vagina. 384
hysterectomy  The partial or complete removal of the uterus. 102

intrauterine device (IUD)  A contraceptive device placed in the uterus and left there for up to several years. 389
menstrual cycle charting  The technique of determining ovulation by charting the monthly menstrual events to aid in inducing or preventing pregnancy. 377
mifepristone (RU-486)  A chemical administered to cause sloughing of the uterine lining, preventing continued pregnancy. 403
minipill  A progestin-only contraceptive pill. 394
Norplant  The trade name for a progestin-only contraceptive implant placed beneath the skin of a woman's arm. 392
oral contraceptives (OC)  Contraceptive hormones taken by mouth. Birth control pills. 390
spermicide  A sperm-killing chemical agent. 375
sterilization  The surgical interruption of the reproductive tract in a woman or man that leaves a person incapable of conception. 395
sympto-thermal method (STM)  A technique of determining ovulation by combining the methods of basal body temperature and cervical mucus. 379
tubal sterilization  The sterilization of a woman by surgically interrupting the fallopian tubes to prevent the passage of ova or sperm. 395
vacuum aspiration  A first-trimester abortion technique for the removal of the embryo or fetus from uterus through a curette tube by vacuum suction, or aspiration. 402
vasectomy  The sterilization of a man by surgically interrupting his vas deferens to prevent the passage of sperm. 119, 396
withdrawal  The removal of the penis from the vagina prior to ejaculation (an ineffective method of contraception); as used relative to sexually transmitted infections, a shutting off of social contacts. 166, 381
