adrenal gland  A small endocrine gland atop each kidney, the source of a wide variety of important hormones. 88, 126, 279
ampulla  Expansion near end of vas deferens. 119
anabolic steroids  Synthetic testosterones that stimulate the growth of muscle mass. 129
androgens  Hormones that promote the development of male or malelike sexual structures and characteristics. 88, 126, 202
cavernous bodies  See corpora cavernosa. 110
circumcision  The surgical removal of part or all of the foreskin of the penis. 115
climacteric  Hormonal changes during midlife and their effects; the group of physical changes that occur during an older person's period of declining sexual functions. 128, 360
corpora cavernosa  The upper two erectile bodies in the shaft of the penis. 110
corpus spongiosum  The lower erectile body in the shaft of the penis. 110
Cowper's glands  Two glands located exterior to the prostate that produce preejaculatory fluid; the bulbourethral glands. 121
cremaster muscle  Surrounds spermatic cord. 117
dartos muscle  muscle in scrotum. 117
ejaculation  The emission and expulsion of semen from the erect penis. 122, 209
ejaculatory duct  The last section of vas deferens before it joins with the urethra. 119
emission  The discharge of seminal fluid from the accessory glands and filling of the urethral bulb; the first phase of ejaculation. 122, 209
endocrine glands  Glands that produce and secrete hormones into the blood. 85, 125
epididymis  The tightly coiled genital duct located on the side of each testis in which sperm are stored. 118
erectile bodies  Bodies of tissue in the penis, capable of becoming erect. 110
expulsion  The second phase of ejaculation in which semen is expelled from the penis. 122, 209
fellatio  Oral stimulation of a man's genitals. 121, 242
flaccid  Relaxed, not erect. 110
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)  The pituitary hormone that acts on the ovarian follicle in the ovary and on the sperm-producing cells of the testes. 87, 125
genital ducts  Ducts that carry sperm and semen. 118
glans penis  The head of the penis. 110
gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)  A hypothalamic hormone that directs the release of pituitary sex hormones. 86, 125
gonadotropins  The pituitary hormones that stimulate activity in the gonads, or the testes and ovaries. 125
hormones  The chemicals produced by and released into the blood by the endocrine glands to serve as internal chemical regulators in the body. 85, 125
hypothalamus  The lower portion of front of brain, from which the pituitary gland is suspended. 86, 125
inhibin  A hormone that inhibits the production of FSH, LH, and GnRH. 89, 126
interstitial cells  Cells in the testes that produce and secrete testosterone. 118
interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH)  The pituitary hormone that acts on interstitial cells of testes to stimulate the production of testosterone. 125
lobules  Compartments in testis. 117
nocturnal emission  The expulsion of semen during sleep; a "wet dream." 124
orgasm  The peak, or climax, of sexual arousal and response; characterized by a series of highly pleasurable muscular contractions of the pelvic floor and the sudden discharge of accumulated sexual tensions, and, in males, ejaculation. 123, 207
pituitary gland  An endocrine gland beneath the hypothalamus that produces hormones, including gonadotropins. 87, 125
prostaglandins  Fatty acid substances that stimulate muscle contraction. 94, 120
prostate gland  A gland surrounding the neck of the urinary bladder in men that produces the prostatic fluid portion of seminal fluid. 120
retrograde ejaculation  Reverse ejaculation of semen into the urinary bladder. 124
semen  A man's ejaculate. 121, 410
seminal fluids  That portion of semen produced and secreted by the accessory glands. 120
seminal vesicles  The two accessory glands near the prostate gland that produce and secrete seminal fluid. 120
seminiferous tubules  The ducts in the testes from which sperm cells are produced. 118
sex glands  Glands that produce and secrete sex hormones. 125
spermatic cord  The cord that suspends the testes in the scrotum. 116
spermatogenic cells  Cells in testes that produce sperm cells. 118
sperm capacitation  The process in which sperm acquire the capacity to fertilize an ovum. 121, 410
sphincter  Muscle that surrounds an opening which closes when muscle contracts. 122
spongy body  The lower erectile body in the shaft of the penis. 110
testosterone  A man's primary sex hormone; the most important androgen. 126
urethra  The duct from the urinary bladder to a woman's vaginal vestibule or through a man's penis. 78, 110
