LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR SECTION I

After reading and reviewing this section of Chapter 12, you should be able to do the following.
  1. Summarize the growth patterns of boys and girls in middle childhood and their average changes in height and weight.
  2. Identify factors that may help account for ethnic variations in growth.
  3. State considerations in treating children who are unusually short.
  4. Outline nutritional needs during middle childhood.
  5. Estimate the extent of malnutrition among children worldwide, and describe its cognitive and psychosocial effects and the effectiveness of interventions.
  6. Assess the current state of dental health and dental care among school-age children, and suggest a way to deal with children's fear of going to the dentist.
  7. Identify trends in the prevalence of obesity, discuss four possible causes of this condition, and evaluate various treatments.
  8. Assess influences on children's concern with body image.

  3. Summarize the prevalence of various acute and chronic medical conditions in middle childhood, and tell how a chronic condition can affect everyday life.
  4. Identify cultural factors in explanations for illness, and tell how cultural attitudes can affect health care.
  5. Summarize causes and treatments for stuttering.
  6. Describe normal changes in vision in middle childhood and summarize the incidence of vision and hearing problems.
  7. Explain the relationship between the impact of asthma and access to health care.
  8. Tell why accidental injury is a great concern in middle childhood; point out which children are at the greatest risk and where, and how accidents can be prevented.
