After reading and reviewing this section of Chapter 9, you should be able to do the following.
  1. Summarize how boys and girls change in appearance, height, and weight between ages 3 and 6.
  2. Summarize dental development in early childhood and appropriate treatment for thumb-sucking.
  3. Discuss nutritional needs and prevention of obesity in early childhood.
  4. List at least five suggestions for helping children eat and sleep well.
  5. Describe normal sleep patterns and bedtime routines of preschoolers.
  6. Name and describe three kinds of sleep disturbances, and tell how they should be treated.
  7. Identify factors that may be involved in bed-wetting and effective ways of treating it.

After reading and reviewing this section of Chapter 9, you should be able to do the following.
  1. Outline the development of gross motor skills, explain what causes that development, and suggest appropriate ways to foster it.
  2. Give examples of advances in fine motor skills.
  3. Summarize gender differences in young children's strength, musculature, coordination, and motor skills.
  4. Discuss possible causes of handedness, cultural attitudes toward it, and advantages and disadvantages of being left- or right-handed.

After reading and reviewing this section of Chapter 9, you should be able to do the following.
  1. Summarize current trends in death rates from major childhood illnesses.
  2. Tell the physical, cognitive, and emotional benefits of frequent minor respiratory illnesses in young children.
  3. Identify the two most common causes and the two most common sites of accidents fatal to young children; discuss the effectiveness of laws aimed at preventing such accidents; and list recommended precautions for reducing the risk of accidents.
  4. Discuss how exposure to smoking, illness and stress, poverty and homelessness, and lead may affect young children's health and well-being.

  1. Distinguish among physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and physical and emotional neglect.
  2. Summarize trends in the incidence of maltreatment, and explain why its incidence is hard to measure.
  3. Describe typical characteristics of abusive and neglectful parents.
  4. Identify typical characteristics of children who are especially likely to be victims of abuse.
  5. State ways in which community and culture may contribute to maltreatment of children.
  6. Discuss the long-term effects of various types of maltreatment.
  7. Describe effective ways of preventing maltreatment and of helping abused children and their families.
