The Baroque Period
Opera in the Baroque Era

Summary

Opera's roots are interwoven with the Baroque period, since the genre began in Italy in the early 1600s. Early Baroque opera was composed for ceremonial occasions of the court. Inspired by Greek mythology and ancient history, it was designed to flatter the aristocracy, who identified strongly with these subjects and themes. Italy was also the birthplace of the opera house. The public was attracted to the opera house for the stage spectacle, as well as the compelling musical nature of the events held there.
