The Twentieth Century
SummaryThe radical developments in science, art, culture and politics in the 20th
Century had a tremendous impact on the way in which humans perceive the world.
Artists, writers and musicians alike began exploring the ways in which these
dramatic developments shook fundamental human beliefs and expectations to their
core. Musician's began to express themselves using revolutionary new approaches
that reflected a sense of a world that could no longer be governed by traditionally
accepted structures, forms and principles. Preestablished relationships and
expectations became less important in composition, requiring listeners of modern
music to rely more on internal cues within individual works. The resources in
this section have been selected to give you a better sense of the cultural and
historic context informing 20th Century art and culture, as well
as the music it brought forth. |
