Physical and Cognitive Development in Early Childhood

Essay Questions

1

Your neighbor has just become aware that his son is left-handed. He's particularly concerned because he remembers that as a child he was left-handed and was forced by his teachers and parents to use his right hand, something he believes caused him emotional problems, but he has observed that people who are left- handed have problems with even simple things, like using scissors. What would you advise him about his son?
2

You are stuck in the middle of an argument among your three best friends concerning cognitive development during early childhood. One of them thinks that Piaget had the best explanations of how children develop, the second believes Vygotsky has the most plausible theory, while the third says that Gelman and information processing offer the best explanations, not to mention criticisms of (especially) Piaget's theory. Discuss all three of these theories and sate which you think makes the most sense and why.
3

Your cousin has told you that it is not an option for her to stay home to be a full-time mother, so she needs to put her child into a day-care setting. She considers you to be a wise person, especially now that you are taking this class in life-span development. What would you suggest to her in terms of finding the best type of day-care option for her child?
