Video and Interactive Multimedia

The Video

The In giro per l'Italia ancillary package includes a two-part integrated video program that was filmed on location in Italy. Coordinated with Chapters 1 through 9, the first part of the video, called Italiano in diretta, shows the grammar and vocabulary of those chapters in action in real life situations. Here, students follow events in the life of Peppe, an Italian student living in Florence, and his sister, Cinzia. To accommodate the needs of beginning students, the authentic language of the video segments is slightly simplified, and the speech of the actors has been somewhat slowed down. The second part of the video, Prossima fermata, a casa!, is coordinated with Chapters 10 through 18. Here, students follow the adventures of Silvana, an Italian student living in Rome, as she travels to Vietri to visit her family. Both parts of the video bring students face to face with the many engaging people, sights, and sounds of modern Italy.

Both parts of the video are accompanied by pre- and post-viewing activities in the Videoteca section of Lezione 4 in the text, and a complete videoscript is found in the Instructor's Manual.

The In giro per l'Italia CD-ROM

The In giro per l'Italia CD-ROM is available in both IBM and Macintosh formats. Throughout the CD-ROM's innovative and visually appealing activities, students must understand what they are reading or hearing and exercise critical thinking skills.

The interactive CD-ROM provides students with even more chapter-by-chapter grammar and vocabulary practice. It also includes a link to the In giro per l'Italia Web page, a helpful "talking" dictionary which allows students to hear words pronounced by a native speaker, and a function that allows students to record themselves speaking Italian. Written student work can be printed out to hand in to the instructor, making the CD-ROM a true four-skills ancillary. In addition, clips from the video that is used in class are accessible on the CD-ROM. Also included on the CD-ROM is the McGraw-Hill Electronic Language Tutor (MHELT), which provides focused practice with the grammar and vocabulary of each chapter in the textbook.
