One of the issues that led to the revival of the two-party system was the protective tariff. Henry Clay emerged as a champion of the tariff and made it a critical part of his American System. Below is an excerpt from an 1824 speech by Clay. How does he appeal to the nationalistic sentiments of the period to draw support for his cause?
