In this chapter you learned that Jim fancies himself something of a повар (chef). Таня, as you recall, was quite surprised that he could fix such блюда (dishes) as картофельный салат and мясной рулет. But how does Jim's recipe for potato salad on page 309 in your textbook compare with the salads that Russians like to eat? To answer that question you'll need to learn more about русская кухня (Russian cuisine). You'll find all the information you need on the "Cooking-Book" site, a кулинарный портал. Both these words are cognates. What do they mean? Point your browser to: http://www.cooking-book.ru

1
First let's compare Jim's recipe for potato salad with some Russian recipes. In the top left corner of the home page, beneath the word "рецепты" (recipes), click on the link for "кулинарная книга."

How would you translate this phrase into English? Now click on the "салаты" link in the right-hand column. On the "салаты" page you find links for eight types of salad. Which one will lead you to potato salad? Click on it. Hint: All the words here except винегреты are adjectives formed from familiar nouns.

2
Now you're on a page featuring салаты из овощей, or vegetable salads. ("овощей" is the genitive form of "овощи").

Let's take a look at a few recipes. Scroll down to find the link for “салат из картофеля” in the left-hand column. This картофельный салат has шесть ингредиентов. How many were in Jim's salad? Does the Internet recipe call for anything that Jim's recipe does not? Use your dictionary if necessary.

Note: You saw the ending "-ов" in this chapter when telling time: "в пять часов, в шесть часов." This is a genitive plural ending for masculine nouns. You'll study the genitive plural in detail next semester.

3
Let's check out another рецепт. Click on the "back" button on your browser. In the middle of the right-hand column, click on the link for салат картофельный по-рюгенски ('in the style of' Ruegen, a German island in the Baltic Sea). How does this рецепт differ from Jim's? Какой салат Вам больше нравится? Почему?

4
Click on the "back" button on your browser. Then click on the "национальная кухня" link in the top left corner. On this page you'll find various different national cuisines, from мексиканская to корейская. But we're interested in русская кухня. Scroll down and click on this link. On the русская кухня page you'll find dozens of recipes.

5
In Book 2 you will learn about how Russians celebrate New Year's Eve. You can get a head start by learning about the новогодний гусь, or New Year's goose, which the characters in the film will enjoy. Click on link for гусь новогодний по-русски in the left-hand column. Сколько здесь ингредиентов? Из чего делается новогодний гусь? Consult your dictionary if necessary. Would you like a slice of новогодний гусь? What do Americans usually serve on festive occasions?

6
You might have notice that the list of национальные кухни on this site does not include американская кухня. How would you describe traditional American cuisine to a Russian friend?

7
If you're working on this exercise as a class, you might want to select recipes from the various national menus and bring the dishes to class for everyone to try.
