Finding an Environmental Organization

To learn more about environmental organizations, go to www.webdirectory.com/, which describes itself as the "world's biggest search engine." You'll find thousands of listings there. Many of the websites are for institutions and agencies, but you'll also find public groups in almost any environmental issue. Choose a general category that appeals to you and investigate a group that seems interesting. What are the goals and tactics of this group? How long has it been in existence? Do you agree (or disagree) with its principles and practices, as far as you can discern these from what's published on the website?

If you can't find an environmental organization that gives useful information about itself in the categories listed in the Environmental Organization Web directory, try searching for one of the "big ten" organizations described in this chapter. What do they tell you about themselves? Would you consider joining them? Why or why not?
Although the Environmental Working Group no longer updates its Clearinghouse on Environmental Advocacy and Research (CLEAR) website, you still may be able to find useful information about anti-environmental groups at www.ewg.org/. Click on your home state (if you're from the United States) or choose a western state to find out about some of these groups and their activities.
