Daniel D. Arnheim Our longtime author and friend, Daniel D. Arnheim, passed away April 11, 2000.
Dr. Arnheim authored numerous textbooks in athletic training including Essentials
of Athletic Training, as well as in elementary physical education, motor
development, and adapted physical education. Among his most recognizable titles
is Principles of Athletic Training which is used by most students going
into the field of athletic training. Dr. Arnheim was Professor Emeritus of Kinesiology and Physical Education from
California State University at Long Beach, where he also served as the Head
Athletic Trainer for all the major sports for men and women at the university.
He received his BA from Pepperdine University, his MA from California State
University at Los Angeles, and his DPE from Springfield College. He was a Fellow
of both the American College of Sports Medicine, and the Corrective Therapy
Association. A certified member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association,
he was a past honoree of the William E. Newell memorial address given by the
Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association. He was also certified in child and adolescent
psychotherapy, and obtained a clinical doctorate in psychotherapy from the American
Institute of Behavioral Studies. Dr. Arnheim wrote the first edition of Principles of Athletic Training
more than 30 years ago when there were no textbooks nor teaching aids available.
Seeing the need to create such a text, early editions were coauthored by Carl
E. Klafs, Ph.D., and more recently by William E. Prentice, Ph.D., at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Now in its 10th edition, and often
referred to as the "bible" of athletic training, Principles of Athletic Training
has consistently dominated the market. It has evolved into a practical and prevention-oriented
text and reference for athletic training and sports medicine. A subsequent need
was identified for a text written for those students needing basic information,
but not pursuing athletic training as a career. Essentials of Athletic Training
also coauthored by William E. Prentice, Ph.D., became that text for those
students pursuing a career as a coach, fitness professional, or physical educator. Today, Dr. Arnheim is a legend among men and women who call themselves athletic
trainers. For nearly 40 years, anyone who has taken an athletic training course
has used one of his textbooks at one time or another. Any of the athletic trainers
in the United States as well as throughout the world will recognize his name.
He always focused on the needs of students and instructors who would use his
books. He cared very much about the professional growth of students, as they
hold the keys to the future of his chosen professions - education and athletic
training. Dr. Arnheim touched the lives of the thousands of students and athletic
trainers through the words in his books, and helped to shape the growth and
the direction of athletic training as a profession. His impact as an athletic
training educator will be missed. William E. Prentice William E. Prentice is Professor of Physical Education, Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as the Director of their NATA approved Graduate Athletic Training Education Program. He received his BS and MS from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. in Sports Medicine and Applied Physiology from the University of Virginia. He also has a BS in Physical Therapy from the University of North Carolina. He is a Certified Member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and recently received the NATA's Sayers A. "Bud" Miller Distinguished Athletic Trainer Educator Award. He is also a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Dr. Prentice also serves as Athletic Trainer for the Women's Soccer Program, which has won numerous NCAA National Championships. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in sports medicine, athletic training, and first aid. Dr. Prentice is the author of a number of best-selling texts and articles on health-related fitness, athletic training, and sports medicine, including Principles of Athletic Training and Essentials of Athletic Training which he coauthored with Daniel Arnheim.
