Bandaging and Taping Techniques
Chapter Overview- Elastic bandages, when properly applied, can contribute to recovery from sport injuries.
-
Elastic bandages must be applied uniformly, firmly but not so tightly as to impede circulation.
-
Historically, taping has been an important aspect of athletic training. Sports tape is used in a variety of ways-as a means of holding a wound dressing in place, as support, and as protection against musculoskeletal injuries.
-
For supporting and protecting musculoskeletal injuries, two types of tape are currently used-nonelastic white adhesive and elastic adhesive.
-
Tape must be stored in a cool place and must be stacked on the flat side of each roll.
-
The skin of the athlete must be carefully prepared before tape is applied.
-
The skin should first be carefully cleaned; then all hair should be removed.
-
An adherent may be applied, followed by an underwrap material, if needed, to help avoid skin irritation.
-
Tape must be applied in a manner that provides the least amount of irritation and the maximum support.
-
All tape applications require great care that the proper materials are used, that the proper position of the athlete is ensured, and that procedures are carefully followed.
