Elementary and Intermediate Algebra
Mark Dugopolski, Southeastern Louisiana University

Feature Summary

  • Three types of margin notes--Helpful Hints, Study Tips, and Calculator Close-Ups--are provided throughout the text to reinforce concepts and promote good study skills.
  • The exercise sets follow the same order as the textual material and contain exercises that are keyed to examples, as well as numerous exercises that are not keyed to examples. Many exercises are based on real data and embody contemporary themes; these exercises reveal how mathematics applies to our daily lives.
  • The Wrap-up at the end of every chapter contains a Chapter Summary, Enriching Your Mathematical Word Power Exercises, Review Exercises, and a Chapter Test, all of which help students to synthesize the concepts studied in the chapter. Most Wrap-ups end with an element called Making Connections, which is a series of exercises that provide cumulative review.
  • The Midtext Diagnostic Review will help students identify skills they may need to strengthen before continuing with the topics in the second portion of the text.
  • NetTutorTM, free with the purchase of a new textbook, offers live, personalized tutoring via the Internet. NetTutor's powerful WWWhiteboard software allows you to post a question and receive prompt feedback from an expert in the subject. The WWWhiteboard allows students and tutors to use proper mathematical notation as well as other highlighting features--truly making this a unique learning experience. Students may also post questions to the Q&A Center and receive a reply within 24 hours. Visiting the Message Center allows students to discuss difficult concepts among themselves, while the Archive Center provides a browseable list of questions and answers maintained by the subject tutor. NetTutorTM is an invaluable aid for all students--the study partner who always has the answer. Link to NetTutorTM from the Student Center on this Online Learning Center.
  • The Chapter Opener discusses a real application of algebra. The discussion is accompanied by a photograph and in most cases by a real-data application graph that helps students visualize algebra and more fully understand the concepts discussed in the chapter.
  • Each chapter contains a Math at Work feature, which profiles a real person and the mathematics that he or she uses on the job. This feature has corresponding real data exercises that give students an understanding of the practical applications of math.
  • The text emphasizes real-data applications that involve graphs. Applications are distributed throughout the text to help demonstrate concepts, motivate students, and to give students practice using new skills. Many of the real data exercises contain data obtained from the Internet, and students can link to some of these Internet sources through the Student Center on this Online Learning Center.
  • ALEKS users can link directly from ALEKS to the tutorial content on this Online Learning Center based on the topic they are working on. Link to ALEKS by choosing the "How's Your Math?" option from this Online Learning Center's Student Center.
