Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
Chapter 8 - Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities| This chapter begins with an introduction to the solution of systems of equations by graphing and by substitution. Then the Addition Method is used as another method for eliminating a variable in a system of equations. The techniques are extended to systems of equations in three variables. Then matrices and augmented matrices are defined as part of a discussion of the Gaussian elimination method for solving systems of equations. Proficiency with matrices is extended through a section on determinants and Cramer’s Rule, and then linear inequalities in two variables are discussed, leading to the solution of systems of inequalities. The chapter concludes with a section on linear programming, including graphing of constraints, and maximizing or minimizing linear functions. |
