This chapter addresses jazz musicians' commercial success as well as their critical acclaim. Do you think that a work that achieves great commercial success, be it in music, film, or another area, can also be artistically worthy? Do you feel that an artist must sacrifice artistic ideals in order to achieve commercial success? Re-read alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderly's quote on this topic. Can you think of artists or works that have been very commercially successful while being artistically significant? How about artists and works that, in spite of being artistically important, have failed to achieve widespread popularity? Finally, can you think of wildly popular examples that seem to lack any significant artistic worth?
2

The text quotes Mary Klages's statement, "In some situations the creative process can be more important than the product." What do you think this means? Do you agree? Could this statement apply to free jazz? Why or why not? Be sure to consider this style's influence on other artists.
3

In describing the music of Ornette Coleman, the text states, "Nothing can be labeled as formulaic." How do you think that this approach was influential to other artists (even if they did not necessarily emulate his style)? Could it be related to the broad appeal (or lack thereof) of free jazz?
