The German ECM record label became known for its high quality sound production standards and artistic freedom for its musicians. How might this influence the development of new jazz styles?
2

Miles Davis is the perfect example of a restless artist, always forging ahead and developing new styles to express himself (even when that meant moving away from jazz traditions, as he did with his electric music). Young lion Wynton Marsalis advocated a more conservative approach to jazz, and his music was much more grounded in the mainstream jazz tradition. Is each artist's view valid? Why or why not? Do you find your opinions more aligned with Davis or Marsalis? Explain why.
3

The text suggests listening to the music of Anthony Braxton more than once in order to grasp its complexity and appreciate what has been created (a suggestion that is applicable to any unfamiliar and complex style of music). How is this a disadvantage to an artist's acceptance? Compare this approach of listening to music to that of listening to a top forty pop tune or even commercial jingle. Would you listen to them in the same way? Could music that requires repeated, concentrated listening be more appreciated by the listener in the long run? Is this true of other art forms (literature, film, visual arts, etc.)?
