This chapter begins with a quote from Wynton Marsalis: "The ultimate achievement for any culture is the creation of an art form." The text goes on to state, "In many ways art helps define a culture and its society." Do you agree with these statements? Why or why not? In spite of their cultural contributions, many jazz musicians struggle to support themselves. Why do you suppose this is the case? Consider some of the most popular elements of our culture today. Do you think they are worthy representatives of our culture? Explain.

The text describes how different artists in jazz are absorbing influences of other musical styles, including hip-hop, various world musics, and contemporary classical. Do you think this is analogous to the development of jazz? Explain your thoughts. You may want to review the roots of jazz discussed in Chapter 4. How could this process foster the growth and development of jazz? Could it be a detriment?
