Find examples of improvisation occurring in music with which you are already familiar. Most students today are familiar with various genres of popular music (e.g., classic rock, country, alternative rock, rap, etc.). Find examples of improvisation in these styles of music. How is the improvisation in this music similar to improvisation in jazz? How is it different?
2

Improvisation is not exclusive to music. What are some examples of improvisation occurring in other arts? Most jazz musicians are disciplined artists who have developed an understanding of their instruments, harmony, forms, etc. Do artists in other fields also have to learn a disciplined approach to improvising? Are there any ways in which you improvise in your day-to-day life?
3

Some rock groups, such as the Grateful Dead, Phish, the Dave Matthews Band, and others, employ a great deal of improvisation in their music. Could their music be considered jazz? Why or why not? Some "jazz" artists perform music that contains much improvisation, yet is not in a traditional jazz style (e.g., Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, Pat Metheny, etc.). Why is this music considered to be jazz? Should it be?
