The text discusses music fulfilling specific functions in African society through rituals and ceremonies. What are some examples of music fulfilling functions in our society today? Might these uses be viewed as rituals?
2

This chapter contains examples of typical blues songs with vocals. The format commonly used for blues vocals is a line of text, which is repeated and then followed by another line of text (antecedent-consequent pattern). Compose your own blues vocal using this format. If you can play an instrument (particularly guitar or piano), you can even try fitting your vocal with chords (see guide below). Example of C Blues: Phrase 1: 4 measures of I chord (C chord) Phrase 2: 2 measures of IV chord (F chord), 2 measures of I chord (C chord) Phrase 3: 2 measures of V7 chord (G7 chord), 2 measures of I chord (C chord) Also see the format of Bessie Smith singing "Lost Your Head Blues" in this chapter.
