The text discusses radio, records, and films as new technologies that helped to promote the spread of jazz. What new technologies exist today that distribute music to new listeners? How might they expose listeners to artists and styles with which they were not previously familiar? How might this affect the development of musical styles? Note that there may be both positive and negative ways in which musicians and the music business may be affected.

Review this chapter's list of aspects of Louis Armstrong's style that characterize him as a true innovator and then listen to his recording of "West End Blues." Each of these aspects is audible in this performance. Try to find specific occurrences for as many of these aspects as you are able, identifying where in the track they occur (e.g., at what point in the track do you hear Armstrong demonstrate his ability to play high notes?).
