Listen to Duke Ellington's "Ko-Ko." The text discusses five categories into which most of Ellington's compositions may be divided: jungle styles, popular dance tunes, atmospheric mood pieces, miniature solo concertos, and multi-movement concert works. Into which category do you think "Ko-Ko" fits? Explain why. The text also gives ten unique characteristics of Ellington's music. How many of these can you hear in "Ko-Ko"? [Note to instructor: jungle atmosphere, blues influence (it is in 12-bar blues form), muted brass, cross orchestration, and dissonance (especially during piano solo) are all present]
