The objective of this exercise is to get a sense of the huge number of business entities that file income tax information returns. Go to the IRS Statistics of Income web page for "Corporation Tax Statistics- General SOI Studies". After downloading the file named 92AL01NC.EXE and extracting the Excel worksheet named 92AL01NC.XLS, answer the following questions. Note the table is reporting in thousands of entities.

  1. How many S Corporations were filing tax returns in 1985?
  2. How many nonfarm Sole Proprietorships filed tax returns in the same year?
  3. Did the number of S corporations increase over the period 1985 to 1992?
