Feature Summary

  • Three-part chapter structure develops superior listening skills through repeated exposures to key works. Each chapter opens with a Listening Introduction that asks open-ended questions to focus the listener's first experience with the music; a Listening Guide then takes students through the work step-by-step; finally, at the end of each chapter, the music is addressed again in a Finale that poses anew the questions from the Listening Introduction, making clear how the listener's skills have grown through the chapter.
  • 2 audio CDs packaged with the text at no additional cost. The CDs include key works discussed in the Listening Guides in the text. An additional set of 3 audio CDs is available for optional student purchase (and free to adopting instructors).
  • "Hearing the Difference" sections. Appearing throughout the text, these 20 sections pair contemporary works with guidance on listening for distinguishing characteristics such as instrumentation, rhythm, tempo, and other elements.
  • "The Live Experience." Throughout the text, this feature focuses on the experience of being a musician—a singer, a composer, or an instrumentalist, for example, and how performers' work affects our concert experience. Examples include “Madrigal Singing in Homes,” “Renaissance Dances,” “Basso Continuo Players,” “The Duties of the Conductor,” and “The Performance of Chamber Music.”
  • Experience Music Interactive CD-ROM. A product of McGraw-Hill's long leadership in the development of interactive materials for music students, this CD-ROM serves as a natural extension of the textbook's content. It mirrors the book in design and organization, and icons throughout the book indicate where materials on the CD-ROM support a concept being learned. The CD-ROM includes interactive versions of the listening guides, and uses video and interactive activities to present key concepts.
  • Highlighted and defined key terms. Terms such as names, styles, and musical elements appear in boldface, with clear definitions.
  • Illustrated "Preludes." Preceding groups of chapters, these beautifully illustrated sections provide essential historical, social, and cultural background to the various musical periods.
